great lakes women's business council

Great Lakes Women's Business Council (Great Lakes WBC), founded by Michelle Richards,  was a pioneer in creating one of the first women's business centers and microloan programs in the country. Great Lakes WBC is a nonprofit champion for women and minority businesses. Through Michelle's leadership, the organization has expanded its ability to advocate for women in business, thereby leveling the economic playing field by removing the many barriers restricting opportunities for women-owned businesses. We are committed to empowering women and minorities economically through access to capital, certification for women-owned business enterprises, corporate procurement opportunities, and business-to-business networking.

Great Lakes WBC administers the national women-owned certification on behalf of the Women's Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC) for Michigan and Indiana. WBENC certification is one of the most widely recognized and respected certifications in the nation, accepted by hundreds of corporations within the country and several federal, state, and local government agencies. The Great Lakes WBC is one of the 14 Certifying Regional Partner Organizations (RPO). Certified WBE have access to a national network of WBEs as well as government and corporate entities. We represent over 1, 400 certified women's business enterprises (WBEs), 90 plus Corporate Members, generating approximately $8.6 billion in annual revenue and employing 48, 000 U.S. workers. The Great Lakes WBC website list events and news.

CEED Lending provides business expansion financing and small business loans to start-up and existing enterprises owned by women or men in nine Michigan counties. CEED Lending has provided $8 million in loans to small business owners who have created 1, 800 jobs. We are committed to standing hand-in-hand with small business owners to ensure success, which means we don't just lend money, we help build strong businesses. Our goal is to help owners take their small businesses to the next level.

Small Business Workshop Series: How To Become A Certified Women Owned Business

As a membership-based organization (corporations, nonprofits, government/public institutions, small businesses, and loan clients), members are encouraged to share and learn from their peers' best practices. Our Corporate Members are committed to providing business opportunities and educational programs for certified WBEs. Their support is essential to furthering women's progress in business and helping women business owners achieve their goals. In return, we help Corporate Members source from a pool of high-quality women-owned enterprises to fulfill their procurement needs and achieve their diversity goals.

Women's Business Center has three major initiatives: Michigan Women's Marketplace (MWM), MentorWE, and The COVID-19 Recovery Program. The WBC hosts an annual executive-level training program,  execWE. The MWM is an online women's business community and training center offering regular, expert-hosted webinars, network through the online business directory, and ultimately grow their businesses. Through the Michigan Women's Marketplace and in-person sessions, we have trained more than 15, 000 business owners and entrepreneurs. MentorWE is a group mentoring initiative, which pairs certified women business owners in an industry/sector-specific cohort with an established woman business owner(s) in the same field to advance and develop their businesses through corporate executive and peer mentoring. Lastly, our latest added initiative, the COVID-19 Recovery Program, is an entirely virtual program designed to support businesses negatively affected by the economic shutdown during the pandemic.
